What is a Thermage Procedure?

Thermage is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure designed for tightening lax and sagging skin to restore a more youthful appearance. Thermage can be used to treat the face, neck and body.

The thermage skin tightening procedure is a safe, FDA approved non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy directed beneath the skin to smooth, tighten and contour the appearance of the skin over the following months.

Thermage treatment procedures are suitable for tightening lax skin on the face, eyes, lips, tummy, arms, hands, thighs and buttocks. The thermage procedure usually takes between 20 minutes and two hours, depending on the size of the areas to be treated.

The thermage treatment works by heating collagen fibers deep within the skin and underlying tissue, causing them to shrink and tighten, while simultaneously stimulating new collagen production which further tightens and remodels the skin over time. The thermage treatment is delivered through a hand held device, the tip of which is passed over the skins surface. As the thermage RF energy is applied to the surface of the skin, the patient feels a brief heating sensation which should however cause minimal discomfort. The skin is protected from the heat with a cooling spray applied before, during and after the thermage skin tightening treatment.

Visible results after thermage therapy are often immediately obvious, and continue to improve over the next six months after one thermage treatment. Results may last for a number of years, though it will not halt the natural aging process.

Thermage Procedure Steps

Step 1 - Preparation

1. You may be offered pain medication to minimize any discomfort during the thermage procedure. A topical anesthetic cream may be applied to ease any discomfort, and the area to be treated is cooled with a cooling spray.

1. The tip of the thermage device is applied to the skin surface of the area to be treated. A brief sensation of deep warmth is felt by the patient as the radiofrequency energy is directed to the skin and underlying tissue. The skin is cooled again during and after each application of the thermage RF energy.

Thermage Recovery and Healing Steps

The majority of thermage treatment patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure.
