Breast Augmentation is one of the most popular Cosmetic Surgery procedures. There are many factors that influence breast
shape and size, for example small breasts or breasts that have decreased in size following childbirth and breast feeding
can be a source of concern or embarrassment to many woman. Breast Augmentation surgery is one way to make you feel more
confident and feminine again. Breast Augmentation surgery involves surgically inserting an implant behind the natural breast
tissue to increase the size of the breast. You can choose the size and shape of your implants to suit your body shape. All
of our board certified surgeons pride themselves on the beautiful natural results they can achieve for patients.
The Procedure for Breast Augmentation Surgery
The implant is usually inserted through an incision made in the natural crease beneath the breast. It is also possible
to make the incision in the armpit or around the edge of the areola (nipple).
A breast augmentation operation will be performed under a general anesthetic and will take approximately 1-1 ½ hours. A
small incision will be made in the crease of the underside of the breast, the armpit or lower edge of the areola. Your
Perfect Yourself plastic surgeon will advise you on the most appropriate procedure for you.
Once the incision is made, your plastic surgeon will create a pocket for the implant to lie in. This may be either beneath the muscle or beneath the breast tissue. Your size and shape will determine the outcome of the position of the implant and will be discussed fully at consultation with the Cosmetic Surgeon. Following the surgery you will have stitches (these may be dissolvable) in place, covered with a dressing and a sports bra. You will be advised to have your stitches removed, if applicable, at 7 days after your operation, or in accordance with your Cosmetic Surgeon's instructions, and to continue to wear the sports bra 24 hours a day for up to 3 months.
The procedure generally requires an overnight stay in hospital but can be performed as a day case.
Types of Breast Augmentation Implants
There are currently several different types of implant available – namely silicone and saline, your plastic surgeon will explain the properties of each type of implant and advise you in making the best choice for you individual needs.
Recovery from Breast Augmentation Surgery
Following the surgery, you will need to keep your breasts well supported. Your stitches and/or dressings will be removed after seven days, at which time you can return to work, and resume moderate activity.
You may also have drainage tubes in your breasts - these will be removed the day after your surgery, before you go home. Your breasts will be firm and swollen at first, and will take several weeks to settle and adapt a more natural position and feel. By wearing a sports bra or specialist medical bra, you will feel more comfortable and have the necessary support.
