Am I a candidate for Body Thermage?

The body thermage procedure is ideal for men and women who are not significantly overweight but who are looking to improve the appearance of sagging skin and reduce unwanted pockets of fat that dieting and exercise alone can’t shift.

The ideal body thermage candidate is between age 35 and 60 and suffers from mild to moderate skin laxity of the face or body.

Suitable candidates for the body thermage treatment may include those who are in good physical and psychological health and who want:

  1. A procedure to smooth dimples and improve skin texture
  2. Long lasting results with no injections, no surgery and little or no downtime.
Unsuitable candidates for body thermage are:
  1. People with implanted cardiac devices such as pacemakers
  2. Chronic NSAID users (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, prednisone, and naproxen)
  3. Women immediately after childbirth, and women who may want to have more children.

What is a Body Thermage Procedure?

The body thermage procedure (also known as radiothermaplasty, therma-lift or therma-cool) is a non-invasive procedure that can help tighten, firm and shape the body without the need for surgery and little or no downtime. Body thermage is used to treat sagging abdominal skin, to lift arms, thighs and the buttocks and to improve the appearance of skin aged by your environment, diet, smoking, or sun damage.

The body thermage procedure typically lasts for 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Radiofrequency (RF) energy is directed through the tip of a hand held device to just below the surface of the skin to heat the collagen below with no surgery, injections, or incisions. During the body thermage treatment, a cooling spray is also used to make the procedure more comfortable and to protect your skin. You may also have pain medication to help to reduce any discomfort.

The results after the body thermage treatment are immediate, because the radiofrequency energy contracts the collagen beneath the skin, resulting in smoother tighter skin. The skin continues to improve over the next three months to one year as it slowly starts to produce more collagen, filling in the lines in your skin, renewing skin contours and achieving a younger appearance. Body thermage treatments result in a tightening and lifting effect, a reduction in girth (circumference of the treated area), and flatter, smoother skin. Results are long lasting depending on your skin condition and the aging process. Results can be improved and prolonged by following a good nutrition and exercise programme in conjunction with and after body thermage treatment.

The body thermage procedure is an entirely non-invasive, generally safe treatment that should however only be performed in a doctor's office by trained medical professionals.

The following body thermage treatments can be performed to improve various areas of the body: tummy tuck (abdominoplasty); buttock lift; inner thigh lift; outer thigh lift; knees; arm lift (brachioplasty); upper chest lift; breast lift (mastopexy).

Body Thermage Procedure Steps

  1. You may be offered pain medication to minimize any discomfort during the body thermage procedure.
  2. The area to be treated is cooled with a cooling spray.
  3. The tip of the Thermage device is applied to the area to be treated.
  4. A brief sensation of deep warmth is felt by the patient as the radiofrequency energy is directed to the skin and underlying tissue. The skin is cooled again during and after each application of RF energy.
  5. The results will begin to be obvious immediately after your body thermage treatment, and will continue to improve over time.

Body Thermage Recovery and Healing Steps

Most body thermage treatment patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Because the body thermage procedure is non-invasive, i.e. it requires no invasive surgery, needles, lasers or chemicals, it requires little or no recovery time. This of course depends on the individual. Check with your body thermage practitioner about body thermage recovery times.

Body Thermage Risks

Body thermage is generally considered safe, but as with any medical procedure there are some risks involved. These may include:

  1. Temporary skin damage
  2. Swelling
  3. Redness
  4. Bumps
  5. Blisters

These normally resolve in a few days or weeks.

Ensure that you discuss the possible risks and any questions or concerns you may have with your body thermage practitioner before undergoing the body thermage procedure.
