Here at the Orcutt Ranch Horticultural Center, formally named Rancho Sombra Del Robel, visitors are able to visit the home of William Warren Orcutt and his wife Mary Logan Orcutt.  William Warren Orcutt was a pioneer of the oil industry in California and was the one who discovered the prehistoric fossils at the LaBrea Tar Pits. 

William Warren Orcutt was known to most as the “Dean of Petroleum Geologists” and in 1899 began his oil pioneering days until 1939 when he and his wife Mary retired to Rancho Sombra Del Roble. In 1901m Orcutt was made managers of the Geological, Land and Engineering Departments of the Union Oil company. As he was working he was the first to find many prehistoric fossilized animals bones that were preserved in the asphalt on the Hancock Ranch. This was one of many discoveries that Orcutt made. In honor of his discoveries paleontologists named the La Brea Coyote after him making the official scientific name Canis Orcutti.
