Body sculpting liposuction Surgery Costs*

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons quoted the national average cost of a single liposuction procedure at approximately, $2868. Most cosmetic surgeons and surgical clinics offer flexible liposuction finance and payment options, some of which allow staggered payments or loans from VARIOUS FINANCING COMPANIES.

Body sculpting liposuction is one of the most difficult procedures for estimating cost because the procedure may be performed on many different areas of the body, by different types of machines, with different types of anesthesia, by surgeons of different experience and skill levels. Fully consulting a surgeon and deciding on a surgical plan for your liposuction procedure will give you an accurate individual estimate of your liposuction costs.

With all types of cosmetic surgery procedures, the cost of the liposuction operation has more than one aspect. As well as the surgeon’s fees, you will have to pay anesthesia fees and facility fees. Anesthesia fees range from around $500 to $1,000, depending on the number of areas treated. The facility fees also vary depending on the number of areas where liposuction is performed, ranging from $600 to $1,200.

The average contouring liposuction cost for one area of the body is up to $4,000, in three areas $6,000 to $8,000 and in five areas $8,000 to $11,000. Liposuction costs are higher for larger body areas.

Am I a candidate for body sculpting liposuction?

If you are considering surgical liposuction, it is important that you have realistic expectations. Although dramatic results can be achieved, they may not be as immediate or obvious as you would like. The success of liposuction surgery, as with all cosmetic procedures, depends on a number of individual factors, such as age, skin elasticity, weight, and overall health.

The ideal liposuction candidate is someone within two to three stone of their ideal body weight with localized problem areas of fat. Your BMI (body mass index), which is a measurement of your total fat content in relation to your size, will be assessed. This gives a base line for the liposuction surgeon to use to determine your suitability for the procedure. Liposuction can be used to treat multiple areas.

There are questions that you should ask yourself before you decide to undergo body sculpting liposuction:

  1. Have you tried diet and exercise?
  2. Are you of normal weight for your height?
  3. Are you in generally good health?
  4. Is your excess fat in specific areas?
  5. Does your skin tone have reasonably good elasticity?
Liposuction is not suitable for people with:
  1. A weakened immune system
  2. Diabetes
  3. Heart or artery problems
  4. A history of blood clots or restricted blood flow

It should be noted that body sculpting liposuction is most successful in people with normal body weight, good skin tone, and those who have isolated fatty deposits that they would like to be rid of. Liposuction surgery cannot be used to treat obesity, and will also not necessarily eliminate cellulite. The procedure helps to improve a patient’s body contour, and will not make you lose weight. Suitability for this type of treatment, as with any other, will be assessed by the surgeon at consultation.

What is a body sculpting liposuction Procedure?

Body sculpting liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty, contouring liposuction, or body lift) is the removal of fatty tissue from localised problem areas of the body, using a surgical technique. It is a very popular and fairly recent method of fat reduction that uses a suction technique to remove pockets of fat from troublesome areas such as the thighs, hips, abdomen, and upper arms.

Body sculpting liposuction helps both men and women to improve the contours of their bodies, through a relatively simple and safe surgical procedure. The liposuction process involves the insertion of a cannula (a slender, hollow metal tube) through a small incision concealed in a skin fold near the site to be reduced, and scars are virtually undetectable. Through repeated movements of the cannula under the skin, fat globules are separated and removed by vacuum suction through the cannula. Usually only one small incision will be needed for each area being treated with body sculpting liposuction. The area concerned is injected with various solutions prior to insertion of the cannula, in order to reduce bleeding and to assist the breakdown and loosening of the fat globules.

Liposuction will sculpt or recontour the body, but does not necessarily result in weight loss. The aim of body sculpting surgery is to lose inches rather than weight, and to alter the patient’s shape. It is very effective in removing of unwanted bumps and bulges and in improving the body’s silhouette.

Areas of the body that benefit the most from body sculpting liposuction are:

  1. Cheeks, jowls, and neck
  2. Upper arms
  3. Breast or chest areas
  4. Back
  5. Abdomen and waistline (love handles in men)
  6. Hips and buttocks
  7. Inner and outer thighs
  8. Knees, calves and ankles

Liposuction surgery can be combined with other cosmetic surgery techniques and may be carried out in a number of areas at the same time.

The amount of fat removed varies but between one and two litres is considered safe. Fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently removed and fat cannot be laid down in the area that has been treated. You will still however gain weight if you over-eat, though the fat will show in other areas.

Different types of liposuction

  1. Tumescent liposuction-- involves the injection if a large amount of fluid (a mixture of salt solution, lidocaine, and epinephrine) into the area being treated. The amount of fluid is usually measured at three times that of the fat being removed. This provides local anesthetic, helps to prevent fluid and blood loss, and makes the removal of the fat easier.
  2. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) –– an ultrasonic cannula uses sound waves to liquefy the fat cells and remove them without the traditional suctioning. This technique is usually used as a secondary procedure when more precision is required.
  3. Power assisted liposuction (PAL) -employs a motor-powered cannula that moves back and forth about 5,000 times per minute. This allows the lipoplasty surgeon to use smaller movements and means less pain during surgery and less bruising afterward.
  4. Super-wet liposuctionis a variation of the tumescent technique that uses less fluid injection. The patient will be under general anesthetic for this liposuction technique.
You will be asked by your liposuction surgeon to point out the areas that you would like to be treated. The consultation with your surgeon will enable you to make an informed decision about whether the procedure is right for you, as it is important to have realistic expectations about your contouring liposuction surgery.

Factors such as a patient’s physical condition, genetic makeup, diet, exercise, smoking alcohol and skin elasticity can affect the results of the procedure. Your liposuction doctor will also consider your general state of health, any underlying conditions which may affect the results of the body sculpting procedure, and any medications you are taking. Your liposuction surgeon will estimate the amount of fat that should be removed from each area to achieve your desired body shape.

The liposuction operation may be carried out under general or twilight anesthesia (where the patient is sedated, but not unconscious). This depends on the individual case. The length of the body sculpting procedure depends on the number and extent of areas treated, though is normally around 1-2 hours. The duration of your stay in hospital will also depend on the same factors, and you may be able to leave the same day, or need to stay in overnight.

Pressure bandages or a corset will normally be applied immediately after your surgical liposuction to control swelling and prevent any accumulation of blood or serum under the skin. This encourages the skin to attach to the muscle wall. Bruising, swelling and discomfort after the liposuction operation is a normal, but temporary condition, the degree depending upon the extent and location of the area treated.

Body sculpting liposuction Surgery Procedure Steps

Step 1- Anesthesia

  1. The body sculpting liposuction procedure is performed under a general or twilight (where you are sedated but not unconscious) anesthetic, depending on the type and number of liposuction procedures you undergo. The procedure is often performed as a day case, taking approximately one to two, though you may need to stay in the hospital overnight.
  2. The surgical liposuction process often involves the injection of a numbing solution. With a local anesthesia, your doctor will only numb the area of your body being treated, and you will be conscious during the liposuction surgery. General anesthesia can be administered either as a gas or through a needle injection, and will put you to sleep for the operation. Once you awaken, you will still be numb in the area of the body that has been treated, and will feel little or no pain.
Step 2 - The incisions
  1. After administering the anesthesia and, if needed, injecting fluids, the next step in liposuction surgery is to create tiny incisions in the area of the body where fat deposits will be removed. These incisions are usually quite small, a third of an inch at the most. These incisions are then used to insert the cannula, a thin vacuum tube, which will extract the fat.
Step 3 - Fat removal
  1. The surgeon will insert the cannula, through the incision (or incisions), into the deep fat layer beneath your skin. Using back and forth movements, the liposuction surgeon uses the cannula to break up and suction away the unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin. A significant amount of blood and other bodily fluids are removed along with the fat, so you will be given replacement fluids intravenously during and after the liposuction procedure. Lipoplasty is a complex process, and choosing a board-certified and skilled lipoplasty surgeon well trained in all aspects of the liposuction procedure, who will be able to explain the process to you in as much detail as you need, is essential.
Step 4 - Closing the Incisions
  1. When the fat removal part of the liposuction procedure is complete, the incisions can either be closed with a few stitches or left open. This normally depends on your body sculpting surgeons preference, though leaving the incisions open can reduce the amount of bruising and swelling that can take place after a liposuction operation.

Body sculpting liposuction Surgery Recovery and Healing Steps

When you wake up from your liposuction procedure the results will be immediately recognizable. There is often some bruising and swelling to the areas treated, however this should subside after one to two weeks. It is advisable to take one to two weeks off work, depending on the nature of your job. The areas affected by the surgery will be swollen, sore and tender to the touch for up to three months after surgery. You will be required to wear a support garment for up to six weeks after your liposuction operation. The appearance of the treated areas will continue to improve once swelling subsides, and your unwanted fat will be gone, resulting in a slimmer, smoother body contour.

Liposuction recovery rimes vary from procedure to procedure. For instance, if you are having lipoplasty surgery on your face, the recovery time will be a lot longer than it would be if you were having surgery on your limbs. Recovery times are also dependent on how much fat has been removed, and how large the area is.

After liposuction surgery, there is always some fluid left beneath the skin. If the incisions are stitched shut, the fluid drains less easily and can lead to bruising or swelling. You will need to wear compression bandages or a compression suit for about a month after your liposuction surgery. Compression bandages and suits are necessary to compress the areas that have been treated, encourage proper draining of fluid, and make it easier for your body to heal into its new shape. Fluid buildup is a common after effect of liposuction surgery. Drains, inserted just beneath the skin, may sometimes be temporarily used to drain any excess blood or fluid. These can be uncomfortable, but are essential to ensure that you heal properly after your liposuction procedure. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics after the liposuction surgery to prevent infection.

Try to take things as easy as possible, as your liposuction recovery will be much speedier if you do. Your lipo surgeon will probably recommend that you walk around as soon as possible after your surgery to help reduce swelling and lower the chances of developing blood clots forming in the legs, which can be extremely dangerous.

Make sure that you know all about how and when to change your dressings, and be sure to go to your follow-up exams. If in doubt, ask your lipoplasty doctor about the best time for you to return to work and physical activity.

Follow all of his instructions to keep your liposuction recovery time short. You can expect to really see your new body shape about three months after your liposuction surgery, and it is important that you continue to eat healthily and exercise to maintain your new figure.

Body sculpting liposuction Side Effects and Surgery Risks

As with all major surgery, liposuction carries risks, such as bleeding, infection and an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. Complications vary depending on how large the procedure, though bruising and swelling are normal. Talk to your doctor about how the risks involved in your particular liposuction operation. In order to minimize surgical complications and the side effects of overexposure to anesthesia, if you are planning on having multiple contouring liposuction procedures, these should be scheduled at least several days apart.

Liposuction side effects vary from patient to patient, and these are the most common:

  1. Bruising
  2. Swelling
  3. Discomfort
  4. Infection
  5. Numbness – which may be temporary or permanent
  6. Extended healing time
  7. Blood clots - clotscan migrate to the lungs and lead to death
  8. Irregularities in the skin - skin may appear bumpy, or withered due to uneven fat removal, poor skin elasticity and incorrect healing
  9. An allergic reaction to the medication or anesthesia
  10. Scarring
  11. Excessive fluid loss - fluid loss can lead to shock and, in some cases, death
  12. Accumulation of fluid
  13. Nerve damage
  14. Damage to vital organs

With today's modern techniques, potential liposuction side effects have been greatly reduced. Bruising usually disappears within a few weeks of having a liposuction procedure, and swelling will improve gradually over a few months.

To reduce your chances of suffering from some of the more serious liposuction side effects, choose an experienced, qualified contouring liposuction surgeon to perform the operation who will explain all of the possible liposuction side effects to you before you undergo the surgery. Make sure you fully understand the procedures you wish to have done, and discuss your expectations and concerns with your doctor. Severe complications can be minimized by disclosing your entire medical history to your doctor and discussing all prescription and other medication that you take on a regular basis. In most cases the side effects associated with liposuction surgery are minimal. Do your research so that you understand all the risks, problems, and complications associated with the liposuction procedure.
