We all love to ogle celebrities in the tabloids and in our weekly glossies, finding comfort in the ‘Hoops of Horror’ and ‘Circles of Shame’ that show our favourite A-listers looking rather worse for wear. (Best pictures include celebrities without makeup; we knew they couldn’t wake up looking like that!). With constant exposure to the public and extensive scrutiny from the merciless tabloids, the pressure to look good often leads celebs to undergo plastic surgery. Despite constant celebrity surgery denials, when your career depends on youth and good looks, surgery offers obtainable perfection.

All this flawlessness has the public enviously admiring the perfected body proportions of celebrities, leading to an increase in plastic surgery procedures to look like particular stars. Plastic surgeons receive requests for celebrity looks on a daily basis, the most requested celebrity breasts apparently being those sported by Jessica Simpson and Hilary Swank. J-Lo and Beyonce predictably have the most requested celebrity backsides, Halle Berry has the most sought after cheekbones, whilst everyone wants lips like Angelina Jolie. Men too have been known to covet celebrity features; it was recently reported that due to the current economic climate, more men are opting for surgical procedures to avoid losing their jobs, with Johnny Depp’s cheekbones apparently at the top the request list.

The public has, however, developed a morbid fascination with the botched cosmetic surgery of celebrities. There are thousands of Google hits for ‘celebrity plastic surgery gone wrong’, with the current big news being Rupert Everett’s surgery that has rendered him unrecognisable, despite him denying having any work done. Other celebrity plastic surgery horrors we also love to revel in are those of Janice Dickenson, Meg Ryan and Joan Rivers, stunning in their youth but looking increasingly plastic as they age.

It seems the celebrities can’t win; we scrutinise them for looking old, tired and bloated, and then scorn their plastic attempts to look better. With increased demand for perfection in the media, more and more celebs are becoming plastic surgery frequent flyers, with regular sessions to keep them looking their best.

Celebrities have been using plastic surgery since its very beginning, and are keen to try new surgical techniques that have not yet reached us mere mortals  The next big thing is rumoured to be Botox’s new competitor, Dysport; another botulinum toxin with similar uses to Botox, but said to be faster-acting, longer-lasting and achieving a softer look. As we approach peak plastic surgery season, a new L.A. favourite is Water Jet Liposuction (WAL) which can help achieve the perfect beach body with very little down-time, letting celebs strut their new summer makeover with confidence. Other potential new treatments on the horizon include stem cell injections to enhance a natural post-surgical look, something that is bound to hit the celebrity world first and foremost.

Pop-Princess Kylie Minogue sums it up in one; ‘For time women have wanted to look their best. It’s just that is what we have available to us today’ (Source: Fametastic.co.uk).  Kylie also thinks that plastic surgery no longer has the same stigma about it than when she was growing up, with more celebrities like herself wanting to look youthful and fresh-faced for longer. We love to scrutinise celebrities because we want them to be flawless, they are in a way are our fairy tale stories of perfection; and you never see any wrinkles on Sleeping Beauty…
