If you're verging on the obese and you’re also equally famous and in dire need to lose a few pounds, a handy way of doing it is surgically. Sure, you could spend a life time eating right and exercising (yawn), but sometimes a fast paced lifestyle and a crack like addiction to fast food will leave you a little more corpulent than is sexy or appealing, or come to think of it healthy. Now just In case you're the sort of person who only does things that “the cool crowd” do, you'll be interested to know that Sharon Osbourne had this surgical procedure, Courtney Love has been highly rumored to have had it, and other celebrities like Roseanne Barr, Star Jones and Randy Jackson have made no qualms about the little extra help they had in shedding those stubborn pounds.
It’s no secret Gastric Band Surgery is a very popular (but frequently and blatantly denied) amongst Hollywood's glitterati and carries the added advantage of not actually being a diet. Gastric Band surgery involves the insertion of an adjustable gastric band (that resembles a twist tie but what do I know?) around the stomach, creating a 'pouch' that holds about approximately 50mls of liquid. Interestingly enough, so if you’re thinking “gee I wonder what 50mls of liquid is equivalent to?” well think of the average bottle of perfume sold, even better, to illustrate the size of your post surgery stomach in terms that a girl like me can actually understand check out this picture of a bottle of Britney Spears' 'Midnight Fantasy' fragrance. If that doesn't make this surgical procedure seem glamorous, I don't know what will.
The band is then inflated with liquid, which is a nifty way that surgeons can adjust the tightness of the band depending on the patient's needs. Once the band is in place and inflated, you feel rather full rather quickly as you fill up your little “perfume bottle sized” pouch, which then drip feeds the rest of your stomach slowly, (let me emphasis slowly). Over time, weight loss occurs due to the fact that stuffing your face just got a whole lot harder.
Of course, there are some downsides to this rather 'easy' surgical method. One of them is a little happening known medically as 'productive burping'. This means that the patient burps up their food. Yummy partially digested upchuck. To curb 'productive burping' (oh how I love that phrase), patients are recommended to eat less, eat more slowly, and chew their food better.
There are some other adverse effects that can take place due to gastric banding, these include (in no particular order):
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Chest Pain
- Infection
- Fever
- Pain
But then again if it’s worth having it’s worth the certain sacrifice, nothing as effective as gastric band surgery was ever going to be a boat ride in the ocean.
